Art Hack Day GIF Booth

Art Hack Day 2012 was an event for hackers whose medium is art and artists whose medium is tech. It took place from January 26-28 at 319 Scholes in Brooklyn.

Over the course of 2 days, we put together a GIF booth made of Processing and cardboard. The image capture was activated using a foot switch with an Atmega32u4 (for USB keyboard functionality). Once captured, the GIFs were relayed in near real time (about 2 seconds) to a web server. The Big Screen Plaza, a collaborator for Art Hack Day, then broadcast the streaming GIFs to their live display on 29th in Manhattan.

The GIF booth software was designed in Processing/Eclipse and used a PSEye web cam. The Processing library for GIFs was lacking in optimization so I turned to Gifsicle, a command-line GIF utility, to handle the compression. Rsync was then used to relay the images to a web server. The front-end web display was coded by Daniel Arce. The GIF booth and 3D printed mustaches were designed and fabricated by Ashley Zelinskie and Katie Wendt. It was made to be entirely laser-cuttable. The projections mappings, concept and motivation came from Mary Huang.

Made with: Processing, Gifsicle, Rsync, Arduino, a Makerbot and a bunch of cardboard Art Hack Day @ 319 Scholes

Prototype for a pair of anti-data pants. The pocket with the red button is lined with RF shielding fabric that prevents the phone from sending/receiving data. When the phone is inside the pocket, no personal data can be logged from the phone.

This is the first prototype of the Off Pocket concept. They are wearable and functional!. The pocket was sewn into my pants so I could wear them out and do some field testing. So far, it works well against iPhone3/4. Different phones may have different signal strengths though. And there’s a little problem that when the pocket is even slightly open around the button, a phone call can still come through. May need to add a zipper or fold-over flap in the next version.

Update (April 19, 2012)

The Off Pocket will be presented at Philly Tech Week on Saturday April 21. I made a second prototype, the Off Pouch, for testing at demo day.

How well do the pockets work? They are 100% effective. The signal is measured on an iPhone using the decible signal meter. The measurement yields absolute zero connectivity. It’s also been tested on Android phones. Here’s a screenshot of the iPhone app built to test signal strengths for various fabric combinations.

Just posted a new artwork for sale in the Saatchi Online Gallery, “100% Bonus”. The erotic theme is an interpretation of spam email fantasies. And it contains over 20,000 of my own personal spam emails collected during the last decade.

I started working on this series of images in 2005 and just recently remastered this image, the first of a new series. It’s printed at 30×30″ on Endura Metallic paper. Prints arrive Friday. Edition of 11. Signed and numbered.

Camoflash in Functional Aesthetics

Functional Aesthetics is a sequel to Seymour’s highly acclaimed book Fashionable Technology (Springer 2008) and contains new state-of-the-art and revealing artistic and design examples focusing on the aesthetic and functional aspects. Chapters like Contextual Prerequisite, Body Sculpture, or Transparent Sustainability provide in-depth studies of often visionary projects seen as stimulation for new developments in the matured field of Fashionable Technology . The book presents inspiring projects between the poles of fashion, design, technology, and sciences. It includes a list of relevant information on DIY resources, publications, inspirations, etc.

Visualizing the OpenCV Detection Process

This video visualizes the detection process of OpenCV’s face detector. The algorithm utilizes the Viola Jones method of calculating the integral image and then performing some calculations on all the areas defined by the black and white rectangles. The sub-window (in red) is scanned across the image at various scales to detect if there is a potential face. In the post-processing stage all the potential faces are checked for overlaps. Typically, 2 or 3 overlapping rectangles are required to confirm a face. Loner rectangles are rejected as false-positives.

This visualization was done as part of the documentation for CV Dazzle, camouflage from face detection. For more information, visit http://cvdazzle.com

Image Composite Experiments 2004 – 2009

These composites are generated using an pixel averaging algorithm. Originally started while an undgrad at Penn State, these were a response to the increasing glut of images created by digital cameras. Using stacks of between 30 and hundreds of images, a new composite image was formed to replace the rest, a digital reduction. These works were exhibited at Penn State in 2004.
